Caleb Mibei: "Being in a cult can be likened to being under a spell."
Caleb Mibei is a respected founding member of our Facebook group whose testimonies and reflections of his past experiences in The repentance & Holiness ministry in Kenya, and the associated struggles after quitting the cult have helped enlighten and encourage many in their personal journeys. When he accepted my invitation to share his Facebook post and testimony to our readers, we were thrilled, and just as many found it a blessing, I know you will too.
Learn firsthand some helpful tips on how to fully disentangle from the enslaving influence of a cult. Please also share Caleb’s tips and testimony with your social circles. We hope that God will use it to bring healing and restoration to many who struggle after quitting a cult.
Being in a cult can be likened to being under a spell. You live as though there is no life outside that cult. You see things from the perspective of your cult leader. Even long after you’ve left the cult, you still feel some strong attachment to it.
This happens because while you were still part of the cult, you were indoctrinated so much to believe that there is no life outside it. If it is a religious cult like the Repentance and Holiness (R&H), you were made to believe that there is no salvation in any other church apart from it.
As this indoctrination happened constantly, you held on so dearly to such beliefs as though your life depended on them to the extent that you became a hardcore member of the cult.
At this stage, you cut off relationships with your friends, family, and even workmates and begun forming new relationships with fellow cult members. You felt at ease in this new alliance since you shared the same beliefs and similar perspectives on life because cult members tend to groupthink.
Now you were happy to be part of an ‘enlightened group.’ According to you, the cult/church was the only purveyor of truth, and with this perception, you felt as though you possessed some hidden truth that everyone else didn’t. This made you feel special. You reached out to the ‘dying world’ with this ‘newfound truth’. Some of them joined and others rejected. To those who joined, you indoctrinated and to those who rejected, you cursed.
Such was the process I believe I went through during my 9 years in the R&H cult and am sure that most of you who quit ‘Owuorism’ can relate. It’s easy to slowly turn to a mindless zombie in that cult!
Thanks though to God that by His grace, I and many others were able to quit.
But quitting has not been without its challenges.
As mentioned earlier, many changes happen to people while they are in a cult. Apart from being slowly influenced to adopt a mental perspective similar to the cult leader’s, there are many other lifestyle changes that occur as a result of the obvious indoctrination and brainwashing, which could prevent you from moving on. Often times, it is hard to disentangle from continuing with the practices and mind-view, because for a while, they had become part of you.
If you quit the cult but still find it challenging to be totally delivered from it, the following tips could help you to completely disconnect from the cult and its influences. They are the same tips I used in my journey out of the cult and I hope they help you too.

Family & Friends

Remember!
Don’t fear to quit the cult because you’ve been told that you’ll go to hell or that you’ll die.
No, that won’t happen, and I can say that from experience!
When I quit R&H, I was told that I will die. It’s nearly 2 years now since I quit. If anything, my life has changed for the better!
When you quit a cult, you experience true freedom in Jesus Christ. Remember that Jesus died for our sins and all those who believe in him will receive eternal life and all who reject him are already condemned. (John 3:16-17)

Well the clear message of God is what truelly sustains a believer, l long to unite again with God’s true people, share God’s word without expiriencing doctrinal conflicts, very ripe in so called repentance, Jesus came to transform, the only valid testimony is that of conviction, repentance and conversion from our sins, l request for support and love from true brothers who believe that christ is alone infallible, not conflicting mockeries on God, better be in heaven with one eye, than seek after miracles that are fake and therein be blinded loosing my true eternal worth, l submit

One of the best decisions to make in 2021 is to be free from the bondage of sin and enslaving systems, like religious cults. congratulations, and welcome to freedom in Christ! Amen. Breaking free from the psycho-spiritual clutches of a cult is never easy.
It takes the grace of God as well as a lot of deprogramming and reprogramming in order for an affected person to clearly see what they had really gotten themselves into.
Very true Nyambura! I couldn’t agree more. Thanks to God who “heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).
I was there too, missing medical classes to listen to Owuor,i’d rather sleep at the cold ground of the Nairobi central park overnight than sleep at my relatives,i stopped hugging my female relatives, meeting after meeting drained my pocket money as a student.I TOO THANK GOD FOR MY DELIVERANCE,I LISTEN TO SPROUL RC,MACARTHUR,VODDIE BAUCHMANN,PST WERINGA,BILL PARKER,LOCAL TRUE PASTORS,who otherwise were fallen according to Owuor,
Hi Caleb,
The first time I saw an image of people lying at the Nairobi Central Park grounds, I couldn’t believe it. Just how does it feel to be outside and on bare ground for some days, all in the name of awaiting for someone to arrive from the comfort of his 5* hotel room? It’s amazing what people do when they are under the influence of heretic doctrines.
We truly celebrate with you your deliverance and pray that you continue growing deeper in your love for God.
Great piece,I thank God He also delivered me
Amen! Glory to God, Annie! Continue enjoying freedom in Christ!
